Misplaced Elka Park late Victorian on 48 Acres in Greene County Comes with a Big Surprise, $550,000
Kandy Harris | November 11, 2015When we first slapped eyes on this glorious late-Victorian mountainside mini-manse in Greene County, we were positive it had to be located in either Elka Park or Onteora Park. The two gated communities are located in Tannersville, less than 10 minutes from Hunter Mountain, right in the heart of old-fashioned Catskill Mountains (think skiing/hiking and 19th century resorts, not Borscht Belt-era). They’re also home to some of our favorite properties…ever, anywhere. Where else can you find an 8000 square foot, 10-bedroom “seasonal cottage” privately situated and ofttimes perfectly preserved in its original late Victorian/early Craftsman state? It’s a friggin’ outdoor museum of historic Catskill houses, you guys. That’s the long and the short of it.
But this house is not in Elka or Onteora Parks respectively. It’s located in the hamlet of Haines Falls, next door to North/South Lake, just up the mountain from Palenville (home of Kaaterskill Falls, for those playing at home). That was our first surprise. The interior woodwork is pristine and a delightful throw-back, although the listing says the house needs work. This was not a surprise. But the property has one more surprise in store (keep scrolling)…
BOOM! Outta nowhere, an Avant-garde art studio in a 5000 square foot warehouse loft, right on the property, complete with its own kitchen and living space. Didn’t see that coming, did you?
Are you in love yet?
