Who among us hasn’t daydreamed about unfurling our creativity out in the wilds of the Catskill Mountains, nothing to distract us from the task of creating and all of the outdoors to inspire us? It’s doable. Every year, Catskill Center accepts applications for its Artist-in-Residence program, which offers a cabin in Platte Clove where artists can stay as long as five days working on pieces that reflect the beauty of the cabin’s surroundings.

Visual artists, writers, poets, composers, performing artists, and environmental researchers are all invited to apply for a residency at the cabin, which sits near the Plattekill Falls trailhead. In fact, the path to the falls passes right by this cabin, so I’ve had a chance to take a peek in the window when nobody was in residence. Indeed, it’s rustic with only the bare essentials and no running water (there’s an outhouse). The cabin, however, has electricity, wood stove, cooktop/stove, fridge, and a phone. It also has all of the 208-acre Platte Clove Nature Preserve in the backyard, where hiking trails and waterfalls are abundant. Expect foot traffic during the summer.

The cabin is open to residencies from June 1st to September 30th, 2017, and the deadline to apply is March 31st. Visit the Catskill Center website for more information and to download the application. Good luck, artists!
