A Custom Contemporary in Saugerties: $795K

  |  July 1, 2024

The Hudson Valley has vintage homes in every nook and cranny. Once in awhile, though, it’s refreshing to look at out-of-the-ordinary contemporary homes. This week, Upstater is doing just that.

Today’s pick is in Saugerties. Its gray vertical siding curves around, two stories high, before flattening out across the facade.

The entry is warmed visually by maple hardwood on the floor and the center-stair treads.

A striking wood-raftered ceiling is a hefty eyebrow to this bank of floor-to-ceiling windows in the great room.

The kitchen is part of the open-concept great room. It has darker-wood cabinetry, a center island with a gas range, and stainless-steel appliances.

Is it us, or does that light fixture above the dining table/banquette resemble an old gramophone horn? Anyway, the cozy corner is brightened with a meet-ya-at-the-corner quartet of windows.

The striking ceiling treatment repeats in this bedroom, which has a double-door closet and a big window.

The primary bath has a loooong white vanity counter, and white subway tile encasing the soaking tub.

The house is listed as having three bedrooms; here are the other two. It’s a bit of a stretch to think a thin curtain is enough of a wall to separate two sleeping areas, unless the new owner has nostalgia for the school nurse’s office or a local ER.

Anyway, there is plenty of closet space to serve those “two” sleeping areas.

A wall-mounted sink is attached to a vertically planked wall in this bathroom. A white plastic shower stall is concealed behind a meat-locker-thick door; an equally hefty set of doors open up above a towel trunk. The listing touts a sauna, so we think this room doubles as a sauna, perhaps?

Overlook Mountain can be seen from the primary suite’s deck.

You can sit under the trees around this firepit and admire the home’s contemporary angles.

An outdoor Jacuzzi hot tub bubbles away your cares.

And the Plattekill Creek frontage offers a cool refuge.

All of this sits on more than 10 acres that’s about 15 minutes west of downtown Saugerties (it’s 11 minutes, about five miles, to great hiking at Falling Waters Preserve).
