Are the Catskills Getting Faster Wi-Fi?

It will look like this, but you’ll be about to post about it on Twitter much faster.

Some people come to the Catskills to detach from their hand-held devices and electronic tethers. However, for others, that lack of access is a big ol’ deal-breaker when it comes to spending time in the mountains. This could all change, though, if the Governor’s office follows through on a plan to bring faster wireless service to areas in the Catskills such as Greene County, which, according to Gov’s office, has the slowest broadband in the state. According to some recent reporting via Watershed Post, David Salway of the New York State Broadband Program made the announcement at a small press conference held at the Roxbury Motel in Delaware County on February 25. But it won’t just be for the rural Catskills. Cuomo’s 2015-16 budget includes the plan to get the whole state hooked up by 2019, a plan that businesses owners who rely on Wi-fi in order to operate, not to mention residents and visitors who suffer lousy cell service, will no doubt celebrate. Don’t get too excited. The state legislature still has to approve the budget when June rolls around, and after that? Only time will tell, but as we all know, the hands of the government move at a leisurely pace, just like the Catskills’ broadband service…and everything else, for that matter.
