Kara Marie Dean-Assael and Margot Schulman want to make a difference in the Beacon community, and they hope to accomplish this by opening the Fareground Cafe, a pay-what-you-can eatery that would allow people who might not be able to afford a meal otherwise either pay what they can afford, or volunteer at the cafe for their meal. Schulman and Dean-Assael modeled the concept off of Salt Lake City, Utah’s One World Everybody Eats community cafe, and while they’ve been operating the Fareground at festivals and events around Dutchess County, they would like to open a brick and mortar location in the city of Beacon. Their IndieGoGo.com contribution page wrapped up its campaign late last week receiving about 12% of their $18,000 goal, so something tells us they still need some help getting things going. Fareground Cafe plans to offer organic, healthy meals made with local ingredients to anyone in the community, not just those who can offered to shop at specialty stores.

If you’re interested in contributing to this cause, you can donate to help fund start-up costs (you can donate here), volunteer on their committees, or spread the word about what their doing their the usual social media outlets. Sign up for the Fareground Cafe’s newsletter, and check out this video they made for their IndieGoGo campaign, which is now closed. Oh, and here’s their Tumblr page, which hasn’t been updated since July of last year, when they acquired a truck.
