Car-Free Country House: Gardiner Stone Cottage, $269,000

  |  June 20, 2012

This adorable stone cottage located in Gardiner (Ulster County) was built in 1740, and it’s in great condition, with original woodworking, plank floors, two stone fireplaces (one in the living room, one in the kitchen). It’s wee: 1188 square feet, 2 beds/1 bath, but there is an additional 252-square foot teeny cottage on the 2-acre property, and it includes a bedroom, bath, kitchen, and living room. Plus, it sits on 2-acres at the end of a private lane far off of Ohioville Road (the location on GMAP is approximate. If you look at the map and follow the unnamed road west of where GMAP says it is, you’ll see a little house with a picket fence in a clearing, and THAT’S this house. Talk about secluded!).

But the important question here is, can it be lived in, car-free? We think yes, it can. It’s about 4 miles from the bus station near the Haggerty Building on the SUNY New Paltz campus, which is about a 20 minute bike ride north on route 32. And once you get into the village of New Paltz, you’ve got a whole bunch of amenities at your disposal.
