Delve into the History Behind Warwick’s Hathorn House, $499,500
Kandy Harris | October 20, 2015You know we can’t resist a juicy piece of history in the form of an old stone house, so we present to you the Hathorn House. Built in 1773 by General John Hathorn, the homestead house is a true historic beauty in need of lots of renovating (but includes a nice 2 bed/1 bath guest cottage, currently rented, that could give you a place to live as you renovate). Some rooms look a mite intimidating in their disrepair, while others seem fine, with pockets of intrigue around every corner. Details include original stained glass, oak floors, leaded glass doors, fireplaces, and fixtures, plus 15 acres of land that could be used agriculturally. In fact, at one point in the Hathorn House’s recent past, an effort was made to turn the property into a “beyond organic” working and educational farmstead (read more on ol’ Wiki). But the fact that the property is currently on the market leads us to believe that effort has not gone forward.
We learned even more about the property on the Friends of Hathorn House website, which will link to even more history and architecture-nerdy minutiae on the construction of the house courtesy the Albert Wisner Public Library….well, let’s just say, you could go down quite an Internet rabbithole with this one. Hathorn House Fun Fact: There’s solid evidence that there are more than a few Hathorn ancestors buried on this property. Happy Halloween, everyone!
