Diary of a Transplant: In Greene County, Sunny and Full of Gas

  |  November 4, 2012

We’ve been through enough power outages by now, that we prepped for Sandy like pros.

We had a rain barrel full of water for washing dishes. I filled three pots of water for cooking, and put a milk pail of clean water in the upstairs bathroom for tooth brushing. We filled the fridge with food, and our spare fuel containers with gasoline. Boarded up the hoop house windows and the chicken coops, put away lawn furniture. Moved one horse into a drier stall and rigged a quick French drain to keep our stable from flooding.

We did all the laundry. Finally, we all took showers and then filled the bathtub.

We prepped for full two full days, and Sandy barely touched us. We got a little wind, a little rain, and that was that. We didn’t even lose power. It was sunny the next morning.

Since then we have been reading the reports of storm damage in the city with disbelief and horror. New York City seemed so invulnerable. It is shocking to read the individual stories of loss and damage, never mind to see how easily basic commodities are undone.

We still haven’t unboarded our coop windows or emptied our emergency barrels of water. Or used up our 20 gallons of spare gasoline.

That’s right, extra gasoline. Which we don’t even need, because there is no gas shortage up here. I learned about the gas shortage in the city when our weekend tenant emailed me that they only had a half a tank of gas and she wasn’t sure they could make it upstate. I assured her that there was no shortage up here. They made it up, filled their tank en route, and should have no trouble getting back.

That’s right folks — no gas shortage up here. Instead of heading upstate for apple picking, come on up for gas buying!

We’re all thinking of you, New York, as you get back on your feet.
