Eveready Diner in Rhinebeck Felled by Fire
Kandy Harris | June 23, 2014If you’ve been out of touch with Hudson Valley news this weekend, you might have missed that the Eveready Diner on Route 9 in Rhinebeck, right across from the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, was extensively damaged by a big grease fire. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the blaze. The news saddened us here at Upstater since the Eveready is a bit of an institution around these parts. The Eveready in Hyde Park was featured on the Food TV program Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri, and there’s a location in Brewster in Putnam County, as well. Thank goodness the Hyde Park and Brewster diners exist, because it might be quite some before we see a rebuilt Eveready in Rhinebeck. Owner Gus Serroukas was quoted yesterday in a Poughkeepsie Journal article, saying, “If we can save it, we’re going to save it. If we can’t, we can’t … let’s see what happens. We love that place so much.” We’re raising our coffee mugs to the Serroukas family today and hoping that in the future, the Eveready in Rhinebeck will be slinging hash until the wee small hours once again.
