The “All That” that people keep saying goodbye to.

Granted, Joan Didion’s eponymous essay entitled “Goodbye to All That” was published nearly a half-century ago (we know; try not to spend too much time thinking about that one), but the theme of the essay, leaving NYC and all of its hustle/bustle behind for more idyllic settings, has been a resounding theme throughout 2014. For those us in the Hudson Valley, the words “Goodbye to All That” immediately brings to mind this book, which came out in late 2013. The sentiment has rung out far and wide, including Jonathan Van Meter’s fabulous article in Vogue Magazine from October 2014. And last month, Gothamist did us a huge favor a compiled a list of “The Best Times People Said Goodbye to NYC This Year.” Most of the pieces involve city dwellers heading to LA and other areas not in upstate New York. Regardless, the trend of leaving behind, well, All That, is seemingly becoming more popular with each passing year, and it’s only a matter of time before those incipient expats discover the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. Oh, wait. They already have. In droves. And if you think 2015 is going to be any different, think again. Considering saying your own goodbyes and heading upstate for the long haul? Drop us a line. We are dying to hear all about it.
