In Narrowsburg, America’s First Interracial Lake Community

  |  October 2, 2012

Okay, we haven’t verified this claim, but a Narrowsbug resident wrote to us to share this film she made about Luxton Lake, otherwise known as Lucky Lake. It’s a lake community just outside of Narrowburg that was once home to many illustrious jazz musicians. Now, like many bungalow colonies, it’s somewhat in disrepair, but the filmmaker herself is one of the people buying and restoring properties there.

Here’s more about it, from the film’s promotional materials:

“Promoted as “America’s first inter-racial lake colony,” Lucky Lake is located two hours from New York City in the foothills of the Catskills. The lake development, also known as Luxton Lake, was a haven in the 1950s for jazz musicians and families from the five boroughs saving for their country house. But when the lake was drained under mysterious circumstances, the community fell apart. Today’s decrepit cabins and rotting rowboats are today’s only reminders of the lake’s rich history.”

There are several properties for sale, and some plots of land, too–almost all need a loving hand to improve them. They include an unfinished cabin for $129,000; a parcel for $29,900; and a four-bed pre-fab for $138,000.
