It’s Commuter Week!
Kandy Harris | March 3, 2014We’ve said it before, and it seems likely we’ll say it again: Living upstate without a car is tough. There are people who do it, but many rely upon friends to get them around when they need to run errands or work out ride-sharing/car-pooling systems. But the determined few do it by living in towns that are easy to navigate on foot or bike. It also helps if that town is a stop on the Metro-North or Amtrak rail line (even better if the station has taxi service) or has a Trailways or Short Line bus stop. Speaking of buses, local service helps the plight of the auto-free, like the Ulster County UCAT or Dutchess County LOOP. Usually, we explore these car-free options on Wednesdays, but we thought it would be fun to devote an entire week to commuter-friendly towns and real estate. Some properties will be walking distance to a public transportation, and others will be close enough for a cheap cab ride. Are you living in upstate New York without a car?
