Kutsher’s Resort Slated for Demolition
Kandy Harris | May 20, 2014Another reminder of the Catskills’ Borscht Belt resort past will be brought down this month. Kutsher’s in Monticello was known as the last Catskills resort (there’s a documentary about it) and managed to survive up until just a few years ago thanks to the music festival All Tomorrow’s Parties, but in more recent times has succumbed to the same decay that befell so many other Catskills resorts. Kutsher’s Hotel and Country Club was once one of the most popular resorts around, an institution among Jewish families who traveled north to enjoy the cleaner mountain air. Fun fact: Wilt Chamberlain worked as a bellhop at Kutsher’s. The property was purchased by Veria Lifestyle Inc. for $8.18 million last year, and they plan to turn it into a spa. More on Kutsher’s demolition on JTA.com. Sad to see it go, but alas, time marches on.
