Living Upstate, in a Relic from the Cold War

We here at Upstater our fond of unusual houses — a home carved out of an old grain silo piqued our interest a while back, as did a 20,000+ square-foot armory. But this one, further north than our usual territory, is a first: a home made out of a missile silo. SiloHome, as they’ve called it, “is a surface mountain home with an underground 20,000 sf vault one can habitat in with luxury.” Or you could just rent storage to a bunch of your buddies.

On top: a pleasant-looking modern cabin, with amenities including a fireplace and, um, a private runway. Downstairs: a “restored 2300 sf two level launch control center.  Their complex is climate controlled using the earth temperature to moderate the surface and below ground environments.  The same principals can be built into the large and expansive additional 20,000 sf silo area.” Inhabitat reports that the four-bed, four-bath was sold for $750,000, but there’s a matrix of pricing on the SiloHome’s site:

Silohome Only Price: $1,995,000

Log Home Price: 259,000

10 Acre Runway Lot w/ 42′ x 46′ Hangar: 150,000

Seven Approx. ave 8 Acre Lots all 7: 476,000

125 Undivided Acres to West (15 Lot Potential): 150,000

Total $3,030,000

So either someone got a bargain or it’s still on the market. Either way, we really hope the owners will invite us over for a tour, and maybe a Cuban sandwich? Is that what you serve in a missile silo? The house is up in beautiful Saranac, in the Adirondacks. And, you’ll be happy to know, the owners report that the Russians are no longer targeting this particular site. Check out a bevy of photos after the jump.
