May Your Days Be Merry and Bright. Very, Very Bright.
Kandy Harris | December 3, 2014It seems that a family in Union Vale, Dutchess County has really nailed down this holiday thing, especially if “nailing down this holiday thing” means literally nailing over 600,000 Christmas lights to your home and property. The Gay family did just exactly that, and now they are the official world record holders for the most largest residential light display, according to Guinness Book of World Records. The Gays beat out the most recent record holder, the Richards family of Australia, who displayed a paltry 502,165 lights on their property. Amateurs, right? The Gay family’s display includes a dizzying array of Christmas trees, shooting stars, bowls of sherbet (??), rainbows, loop-de-loops, and hearts, all of which can assuredly be seen from space. But the Gays’ efforts aren’t just for fun. They also collect donations from those who come by to gawk at the display’s resplendence, which they then donate to worthy causes such as domestic violence victims’ organizations and other community groups. Meanwhile, the rest of us feel like Clark Griswold. Looks like we’re going to have to step up our light display game just a tiny bit. There’s always next year…
