Newburgh: The next Big Thing?

We’re all a little weary of the endless comparisons between this or that neighborhood in Brooklyn to this or that town in Hudson Valley, so it was nice to read this recent article in Hudson Valley Magazine. Long Islander George Mansfield, who bought a brick building in Beacon in 1999, was quoted in the article as saying that comparing Beacon to Brooklyn, “is a little off. I don’t think these people have a need to recreate Brooklyn. It is almost that they have a need for something else — something real and genuine.” So can we finally put the comparison to bed? Can we all agree that the Hudson Valley isn’t Brooklyn and it never will be, no matter how many downstaters head north? Probably not, and according to the same article, we can expect the comparisons to continue in relation to Kingston (we’ve seen and heard it already), thanks in part to an uptick in second home purchases over the past few years, according to the article. But Newburgh could be headed in the same direction. That’s right, Newburgh. Cue the folks calling Newburgh the new Hudson in 3…2…1…
