On the Rondout in Kingston

rondout

Once upon a time, the area currently known as the Strand along Kingston’s Rondout Creek was its own little village called, appropriately, Rondout. While it’s no longer a separate village, the Strand has a close-knit community vibe that makes it particular among the other neighborhoods in Kingston. When there’s a festival or street fair to be thrown in Kingston, it happens on the Strand. When there’s a gallery walk in Kingston that’s not happening in uptown, it’s happens on the Strand. When groups of friends all over Ulster County ask themselves, “Where should we eat tonight?”, chances are decent that they may end up at one of the many great restaurants on the Strand. Arguably Kingston’s coolest neighborhood (although we hesitate to say that; parts of midtown and uptown are pretty darn cool, too), the Strand is actually the Rondout-West Strand Historic District, one of Kingston’s four historic districts. The 19th-century architecture around the Strand is a visual treat, which is why we chose this neighborhood upon which to focus our undivided attention this week. Overall, prices are reasonable most places in Kingston, but beware the property taxes. It’s an issue that’s plagued the Ulster County city for quite some time, and some owe it to inaccurate property assessments. As always, it’s important to reality-check properties before jumping in with both feet. Taxes might be a deal-breaker. If you’re curious about the Strand, here’s some more info on Kingston’s waterfront.
