Small Town Exodus…But Not in the HV

Rumor has it that millennials are leaving small towns for more urban areas in droves. Ozy.com reports that places like Arlington, VA, which experienced an 82% increase in its population between 2007 and 2013, are the direction that twenty- and thirty-somethings are headed. What’s more interesting about this, however, is that these twenty- and thirty-somethings are flocking to cities and suburbs with high housing prices. Naturally, we couldn’t help but consider our own Hudson Valley and Catskills small towns and what’s happening with their populations. A quick Googling shows that small cities like Kingston and Beacon have maintained steady population over the past decade. Hudson, depicted above, has seen an ever-so-slight dip in population numbers, but over all, from our admittedly quick search, there just hasn’t been the mass exodus from small towns in the Hudson Valley as there have been in other parts of the country. So what gives? Just spitballing here, but we suspect that the reason lies with the accessibility to NYC. We’re living in the best of both worlds up here: Close to the city, but a million miles away. Sounds ideal to us.
