The Shutdown’s Effect on the Hudson Valley

The Poughkeepsie Journal took to the streets to find out which businesses in upstate New York have been affected by the government shutdown. We have many a national historic site in the Hudson Valley, including the Roosevelt homes in Hyde Park which have been shuttered while Congress, um, does what it’s doing. “Properties still closed in Hyde Park include the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, FDR’s home, Vanderbilt Mansion, Val-Kill and Top Cottage,” they write. “Officials say it has had a huge impact on commerce in the area. In Hyde Park, the shutdown has slowed traffic at businesses like restaurants and motels, employees and managers said.” The sites usually see 1,000 visitors each weekend during leaf-peeping season. Thankfully, the leaves themselves aren’t owned by the government.
