Town of the Week: Big Indian

  |  September 24, 2012

Admittedly, there’s not much of a town in Big Indian; it’s a hamlet within the town of Shandaken, about 15 minutes past Phoencia off Route 28. (If you’re looking for a place with public transportation, the bus to Phoenicia and a car from there is your best bet).

And that’s kind of what we like about it: it’s serious country. You really feel like you’re in the mountains here, smack dab in the middle of the Catskill Park, with few signs of civilization other than the delicious, locavore Peekamoose Restaurant and a few adorable looking country lodges. If skiing in upstate New York is your thing, Big Indian is minutes from the Belleayre Ski Center. It’s also a popular spot to get married, with a few summer camp-style resorts to rent.

You’re more likely to have internet here than cell service, something to consider if you’re looking to stay fully on the grid. But the real estate is promising. You can pick up something cute for less than $300K, or something awe-inspiring for the price of a cool million. At the time of this writing, the average listing price is about $260,000.
