Town of the Week: Lagrange
Kandy Harris | July 16, 2012
Freedom Park, Lagrange, NY
The town of Lagrange is located in the southwest corner of Dutchess county, just off the Taconic Parkway and east of the Hudson. Flanked by the James Baird State Park to the north and the West Mountain State Forest to the east, Lagrange is surrounded by forests, lakes, ponds, and lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. There are also a ton of local parks in the town of Lagrange and the surrounding areas.
The town itself consists of a handful for hamlets, the most populated being Lagrangeville with around 6,000 residents. In fact, the majority of the houses listed in Lagrange are located in Lagrangeville.
So what IS for sale in Lagrange? Well, lots of McMansions, for starters. It took us a little time to sift through the mass-produced luxury houses to find the good stuff, but good stuff we did find. There are some nicely-restored older houses, lots of variety in the $300,000 range, and virtually nothing for sale for less than $100,000, unless you like condos. The average price per square foot is around $137, which seems typical for this part of Dutchess County.
Lagrange doesn’t have much in the way of a walkable town center, but there are the essentials: A couple of grocery stores, a restaurant or two, and, most importantly, a farmers market. There’s also Freedom Park, which is a great community gathering place with a band shell, pavilions, and a really nice-looking bathing beach (for residents only, darn it!).

Lagrange is approximately 90 minutes from NYC and about 20 minutes from the Poughkeepsie Metro North/Amtrak station.
