Town of the Week: Narrowsburg

Our introduction to Narrowsburg was this: a dot on a Sullivan County map with the words “cute town” inked over it by our hosts. Indeed, the adjective was apt. Narrowsburg is an adorable hamlet, on a striking stretch of land along a wide section of the Delaware River. It feels very magical, coming in from the “highway” and through the semi-strip mall section into the Mayberry-like one block-long downtown. There you have your choice of junk shop or antiques, both well stocked with goodies; restaurants; some fancy clothes; a feed store — you can see how it caters to the tourists and weekenders searching for that cuteness, and the full-timers keeping things real and rural.

The town is known as the “Eagle capital of New York State,” and houses the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Commodore Murray Cup and the Delaware Valley Opera. Yes, culture abounds. And yet, this is serious small town-dom, with a population of 431 at the last census.

As for real estate, that’s our one complaint: although we’ve seen beautiful homes there for sale in the past, there’s not much on the market right now that gets us excited. The good news is this: there’s little for sale for more than $400,000. This is an affordable section of upstate New York, and a beautiful one. If you can find a great house, too, well, all the better.
