Town of The Week: Rock Hill

Shallow Pool, Rock Hill

At the turn of the century, the hamlet of Rock Hill in the Sullivan County town of Thompson was a mecca for summer cottages and inns. For $7, you could stay at places like the Sunny Crest Farm, where you wiled away the sultry summer days by playing croquette on the lawn, swimming, trout fishing, hunting, or, if you were a “wheelman”, you could enjoy one of the area’s fine driving roads.

In some ways, not much has changed in Rock Hill. While the inns have given way to private residences around Lake Louise Marie, Wanasink Lake, or Treasure Lake, those living in the area are still looking for relaxation, outdoor recreation, and a Catskill Mountain escape from the grind.

Here are the details on Rock Hill: It’s located in southeastern Sullivan County, near the banks of the Neversink River. Indeed, there are  things to do outside around Rock Hill, including the Holiday Mountain for winter or summer activities, and hiking around Katrina Falls, a 90-foot waterfall located in the Neversink Unique Area. There’s also a farmer’s market in Rock Hill, open from June to September. But if you’re not into the outdoors and you want to live in a place where you can  walk to town from your house, Rock Hill probably isn’t for you.

What Rock Hill does have is lots of lake homes, many of them in the completely reasonable $200,000 range. Additionally, a lot of them were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and while the interiors of quite a few of these lake houses need some updating, the surroundings are just as lovely as can be. Ultimately, that’s why we found ourselves in Rock Hill this week. Maybe the late winter/cusp of spring cabin fever is starting to kick in, but we’re finding ourselves thinking longingly about sipping coffee on our porch on a lazy Saturday morning in the summer and then heading out for a refreshing dip in the lake.

Rock Hill is located near the southwest border of Ulster County, approximately 90 minutes from NYC.
