Upstater’s very own Lisa Selin Davis penned this New York Time’s article on NYC ex-pats who’ve moved north to dip their toes in the water of the hospitality and service industry. The Spruceton Inn in West Kill, The Graham & Co. in Phoenicia, Table on Ten in Bloomville, the Stewart House in Athens, and the Roundhouse in Beacon are all featured in the story. But why leave the urban pace of the city of open a guesthouse or hotel in the country? It’s a risky venture, to be sure, but according to Spruceton Inn owner Steven Weinberg, “Your money stretches a lot farther up here.” The owners of these boutique hotels and motels also appreciate the rustic, outdoorsy vibe of the Hudson Valley and Catskills and incorporate them into their design schemes. So, if you were planning a trip upstate and weren’t sure where to stay that isn’t a characterless chain hotel, now you know.
