Upstater Destinations: Catskill Mountain Railroad
Kandy Harris | September 27, 2012Honestly, we can’t think of a better way to see the autumn colors changing then from the window of the Catskill Mountain Railroad. This historic train once carried bluestone from Ulster and Delaware County to New York City for sidewalks in the 19th century, but now, it carries passengers on two routes in Ulster County. Riders can choose the Kingston shuttle, which boards at the Kingston Plaza and journeys through historic Kingston. Or for a more nature-loving trip, riders can choose the Esopus Scenic Train which offers views of the Catskill Mountains and the Esopus Creek. The Esopus route was shut down after sustaining damages during Irene last year, but it’s back up and running on a modified 5-mile route from Mt. Tremper to Boiceville (fares have been adjusted accordingly).
The Catskill Mountain Railroad offers a number of theme rides, including the Fall Foliage special. The train also has Halloween-themed rides as well as winter holiday rides on the weekends. Look for us on both with our kids in tow.
