While We’re on the Subject of Restorations…

…did you know that the Clearwater has been undergoing extensive renovations? The NYT ran a piece last weekend about the sloop, a 60-ton replica of the 18th century sloops that once ruled the river, and its on-going restoration taking place at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in downtown Kingston. For the uninitiated, the sloop Clearwater was the brainchild of Pete Seeger and has been hosting passengers and sailing around the Hudson to raise awareness for environmental issues since 1969. Back then, the Clearwater’s aim was to bring attention to the Hudson’s PCB levels, but the Clearwater has stumped for a number of environmental causes that affect the Hudson River (and everywhere else, too), such as climate change.

According to the NYT article, approximately half of the $2 million spent on its restoration came from the state while the rest came from private donations. The Clearwater should be sea-worthy (or river-worthy, to be more exact) by sometime this winter.
