Woe is Kingston
Upstater | September 25, 2012Don’t worry, we still love Kingston, with its artists’ housing in the works, its many culinary offerings, its beautiful Stockade District and really good meat.
But, according to a recent article in the Daily Freeman, it’s got some problems, too. First, in the infrastructure department, they write, “A reservoir with a near-record low water level has put Kingston under a restrictive ‘drought emergency’ for the first time in more than 30 years.
“A sinkhole on Washington Avenue caused by a leaky underground tunnel is gobbling up taxpayer money, causing headaches for neighbors and hurting nearby businesses because potential customers can’t get to them.”
Then there’s the closing of two elementary schools, the major repairs needed at the High School, and the recently announced plans to close the Kingston Hospital in 2014. Crime’s on the rise, they report, and the hospital’s closing will have a disastrous effect on unemployment.
Of course, there are many thriving small businesses in Kingston, much going on in the local art scene, beautiful parks and affordable homes. And, says the local government, the sinkhole can be fixed.
