Writer Edna St. Vincent Millay loved Steepletop, her farmhouse retreat in Columbia County, so much that she and her husband, Eugen, spent 25 years there being creative, basking in nature, and reveling with like-minded friends. When she passed away in 1950, she was buried there along with her husband and family members. Now, the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society acts as stewards for the property and have opened it up for visitors to enjoy. On Saturday, July 19, the Society will be holding a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Steepletop’s new visitors center, the Tamarack Cottage. From noon to 4pm, Steepletop will be open for tours free of charge. Visitors can prowl around the grounds and enjoy the view, check out an exhibit of St. Vincent Millay’s personal effects, and browse the gift shop. If you feel a hankering for something bucolic, it doesn’t get much more bucolic than Steepletop. It’s no wonder Edna loved it so much.

More about the ribbon cutting event and other goings-on here on the Society’s website. (GMAP)
