(Car-Free?) Athens Farmhouse + Studio, $149,900
Kandy Harris | July 16, 2014Oh, how we do adore the Greene County village of Athens. Located across the river from Hudson, Athens isn’t what you’d consider a bustling town by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a cultural center, a few restaurants and pubs, and a Field Goods produce pick-up spot, not to mention a pretty view of the Hudson River waterfront. This Colonial farmhouse listed for $149,900 is close to it all while still managing to remain tucked away on a side street. The house is has a surprisingly roomy kitchen for a 1,000 square foot space, and while the lot size is small, the property includes a detached studio space. The Adirondack Trailways bus stops in the center of the village, so we’re considering it for Car-Free status with an important reality check: It takes 4 hours to make the trip from Athens to NYC Port Authority, and a round-trip ticket will set you back $80. Ouch. So, perhaps a weekend/getaway home for those who want to get in touch with nature but still want to be around people? Or, perhaps an inexpensive option for a full-time upstater? Either way, we love it.
