Former General Store/Cooper’s Shop in Bovina Center, $149,000
Kandy Harris | April 23, 2015Admittedly, we had to look up what a “cooper” was. Turns out, a cooper is someone who, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, is a barrel maker or anyone who makes “wooden, staved vessels, bound together with hoops and possessing flat ends or heads.” But even more fun than this definition was the list of items that a cooper might build aside from barrels, including buckets, tubs, butter churns, hogsheads, firkins, tierces, rundlets, puncheons, pipes, tuns, butts, pins and breakers. So if you’re looking for a place in Catskills to work on your firkins, might we suggest this former cooper’s shop in the hamlet of Bovina Center in Delaware County? Constructed in the mid-19th century, 1669 County Highway 6 does sit right on the road, but there is a half-acre yard in the back that includes a smokehouse, chicken coop, old stone walls, and a garden. Most of the interior shots are of its 4 bedrooms (built-in dressers! Love them!), so we included a couple. Would love to see other rooms. Situated practically next door to Russell’s, Bovina’s only store.
