Let There Be Skylights—This Germantown Chalet’s Got ‘Em for $479K

Daylight is free light inside a home. And one of the best ways to bring that glow inside is through skylights—the theme of this week’s house tours.

Today we are in Germantown, located on the eastern banks of the Hudson River in Columbia County between Tivoli and Hudson. This three-bedroom, 1.5-bath chalet-type house was built in 1977 and has quirky details among its solid bones.

The wooden steps leading to one of the two entrances could use some love, but the combination cedar and shingle siding appear to be in good shape.

The open ceiling on some of the main floor exposes the rafters. The entry opens onto a tiled dining area, and a tile border surrounds a wood floor in the kitchen.

Triple floor-to-ceiling windows wash the area in light.

In our experience, we’ve found that there are people who either love country-style tile backsplashes in a kitchen, or those who hate it. We lean toward liking it, but the new owner could choose to knock it all out and redo it.

Behind the kitchen is a red-floored den/music room. A brick chimney set into a brick floor separates the two rooms from the living room. The chimney has a flue that’s ready to accommodate a wood stove.

The living room’s pitched ceiling is finished with white-painted planking. That, along with big windows, help to combat the dark blue carpeting that darkens the room. Maybe the new owner would want to replace the flooring here.

A very rustic set of stairs curls its way up to the second floor.

The second floor is bright and airy, thanks to skylights and white walls. A stone-tiled floor lends a folksy charm to the space.

The tile continues into the full bath on the second floor.

The listing shows only this one bedroom, which brings the outdoors in—in more ways than one: Twin floor-to-ceiling windows pair with a skylight to add light among a quirky choice of cedar shingles for the cove ceiling.

The 1,867-square-foot house sits at the end of this long driveway, and comes with more than 10 acres of property. It’s a six-minute drive to Germantown faves like Gaskins, and about 20 minutes to hip Hudson.
