An Updated 1960s Split-Level in Dutchess County for $389K

  |  October 5, 2022

Wappingers Falls is a sweet community: There are lots of homes on neat little lots, it’s close to the train and close to great shopping, and it’s got a pretty downtown.

This split-level’s Jetsons-esque, swooping roof line belies its 1963 birth. But the interior has had some interesting redesigns.

The front door gets you into the living room, with triple-paned picture windows on opposite walls and a nice hardwood floor. The ceiling follows the roofline up, and a ceiling fan keeps the air moving. Like all splits, there’s a stairwell with choices to be made.

Let’s head down.

Two half-flights later, you’re in the kitchen. A granite-topped, walnut-toned island is canted at an angle in the room, with an interesting pendant light above. More granite covers the countertops, and there’s a lot of storage to be had in those upper and lower cabinets, which have sleek nickel hardware. There’s room in here for a sofa next to mullioned sliders out to the backyard. This room doesn’t need any updating except the paint, if the new owner dislikes mustard.

This level has this stone-tiled half bath, with a brown-glass vessel sink.

The top level of the house has three bedrooms, any of which could become the primary one. This one has neutral walls and a chestnut-colored hardwood floor. Note the pretty trim on the windows; we’d bet that’s not MDF, but solid wood.

This room is colorful; if the new owners want to change it, they should replace the baseboard heat covers, too.

This bedroom has the same wood floors, but the ceiling curves up a little and adds some interest.

All three bedrooms share this compact bathroom. The tub/shower has glass sliders. The somewhat dated wallpaper and flooring could use some love.

But you’ll love the fenced, spacious backyard. Looks like there used to be a pool in the center, just off the stone patio and firepit. Depending upon local regulations, the new owners might be able to put in a new one. You can’t beat the location: It’s just eight minutes to the New Hamburg train, five minutes to Adams Fairacre Farms and other shops on Route 9, and an hour and a half drive to Manhattan.
