Poughkeepsie’s Academy Street is chock-full of stately old homes, and today’s Upstater pick is one that does not disappoint.

This grande dame in Poughkeepsie was built in 1859. It has seven bedrooms and 3.5 baths. The exterior is brightly colored in cream, with green shutters and green trim on the front porch, the doors, and the window lintels. The third floor has a half-hexagonal dormer in front.

The entry is voluminous, with a sweeping staircase winding up from one side of the hardwood flooring.

The connected parlor and living room each has a marble fireplace and beautifully coffered ceilings.

See what we mean?

A columned fireplace anchors one wall of the dining room.

This cute sunroom is also on the main level.

The kitchen mixes vintage and modern in an elegant way. Cream cabinets are topped with black granite, while a chunky, column-legged island takes center stage across from an Aga-type gas range. There’s plenty of room for a dinette, too.

This half-bath is off the entry.

The second-floor hall is cavernous.

The primary bedroom has gray, wall-to-wall carpeting and a fireplace.

The hall bath is massive, with marble-tile flooring and toile wallpaper above white wainscoting on the walls. A brass-claw-footed, porcelain slipper tub is catty-corner from a tiled shower stall.

A second-floor laundry is a nice modern touch.

This bedroom has a desk butted up against the fireplace.

The adjoining bathroom is a riot of blue, from the tiled walls to the patterned penny tile on the floor. The slipper tub here has silver claw feet.

The third floor is another maze of rooms (accessible from both the main staircase and a steeper, plainer “servant” staircase. All of the rooms here are well-kept; see them more closely in the virtual tour online.

This one’s a bit smaller than the others, with gray wall-to-wall carpeting and a teal accent wall.

The carpeting here needs a little tightening up.

A gorgeous home office is tucked within the half-hexagonal dormer. It’s got angular walls and three windows cut into the front; built-in bookcases that curve on either side; and sunlight pouring down from a skylight. The entire house measures more than 6,600 square feet.

This bathroom has a clawfoot tub shrouded within the curtain.

All of this house is tucked onto less than a third of an acre. It’s ideally located in the Academy Street Historic District, and close to restaurants, shopping, and the train station. It’s under a half-mile to Hudson & Packard for pizza; shows at the Bardavon are just a teeny bit farther.
