A Semi-Updated Colonial in the City of Peekskill: $475K

This week, Upstater is visiting the northern Westchester city of Peekskill.

Actually, it’s a relatively new city, incorporated in 1940. But the “village” of Peekskill was born in 1816. This semi-updated Colonial in the city of Peekskill was built later that century, around 1890. It retains its vintage bones in the lines of the front porch and the double stack of bowed windows on the facade.

The staircase is beautifully patinaed with age, though parts of it are a bit scuffed.

The living room is spacious and airy, with hardwood flooring shared by the entry hall and dining room.

One of the first-floor bowed sections—there’s one on the side of the house, as well as the front—is the dining room, which showcases a built-in china hutch.

The hutch juxtaposes with a modern kitchen. Quartz counters cover a white center island and a bank of cabinets that also house a gas range and hood, and a stainless steel fridge.

A stained-glass window in the stairwell harks back to the home’s birth.

The house has three bedrooms, all on the second floor. This neutral bedroom has a top stack of bowed windows, all trimmed in what looks like chestnut wood.

It’s got a double-door closet…

…and a parquet-floored walk-in closet, as well.

There’s no bathroom on the main level—this full bath, with an aging tub/shower, can be found on the second floor.

This bumped-out bedroom has amazing wood trim and lavender walls.

Aqua is the paint of choice in the third bedroom. All the trim in this room has been whitewashed.

The walk-up attic is carpeted and angular, with whitewashed walls.

The basement is partially finished, with minty green walls—which are most likely waterproof wallboard awaiting a proper paint job.

There’s room for imagination, and we’d love a closer look at that barn door in the background.

A full bath is completely installed on this level, too.

And the laundry area is tiled and ready to go.

The house isn’t huge: The listing says it’s 1,232 square feet, but we’d bet the attic and basement aren’t included in that measurement. A set of wooden stairs lead down to a a deck that’s good for entertaining.

The house has just over a tenth of an acre of property—but it’s generous, given the city location. Main Street and the Birdsall House is a three-minute drive from here, and Depew Park is a stone’s throw.
