Five-Figure Friday: An Alpine-esque Cottage in Callicoon for $99K
Jane Anderson | March 1, 2024Happy Five-Figure Friday! Today, Upstater is at an alpine-esque cottage in Callicoon.
Unlike most five-figure properties we’ve seen lately, this pick is fairly young—built in 1975—and each room isn’t full of collapsed ceilings and holey floors. Buyer beware, though: It does need work. But isn’t the exterior cute? That second-floor balcony and scalloped barge boards would make Heidi swoon.
The front door (behind a storm door) is latticed with diamond panes. The front deck wraps around to the side.
Inside, the staircase continues that Old World ethos with carved spindles. The staircase wall is lined with knotty pine; it looks like other walls are covered in 1970s-era faux wood paneling. Purple wall-to-wall carpeting covers a lot of the main floor.
A cast-iron woodstove is tucked into a brick fireplace that’s backed by a brick wall.
The carpeting continues into a dining area next to the kitchen.
The Brady Bunch would be comfortable here in the kitchen, with its wood-paneling cabinets and white Formica countertops. The appliances—including a gas range next to an under-cabinet oven—all need replacement. If the new owner thinks someone could love the look, they could carefully remove them and donate them to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores.
Head up the wood-paneled-and-purple-carpeted stairs…
…to two bedrooms. This one has a peaked ceiling and storage areas at floor level. We’d rip out the floor and the wood paneling.
This room appears to be in better condition. At least, we love that door…
…that opens to the front balcony.
The house is on 0.40 of an acre, with a shed for storage.
It’s just looking for someone to love it back to life. That lover would need to reinstall both water and electric, both of which are lacking here.
The property is under a 10-minute drive to Callicoon Brewing Company for great food and brews before you head out onto the Delaware River for rafting (once the weather warms up).
