Coming Soon: An Illuminated Newburgh

Power-Station-001

In 1884, an electric power station went up in Newburgh. No big deal, except that it was one of the first of its kind in the world, the construction of which oversaw by the watchful eye of Thomas Edison himself. The building is still in use today and stands as a reminder of Newburgh’s illustrious past as a place of progress, industry, and ingenuity along the bustling Hudson River. The city plans to celebrate this history June 20-22 during the Newburgh Illuminated Festival, a “festival of arts, heritage, and music, celebrating the city of Newburgh,” so says the website. Festival couldn’t come at a better time. The Newburgh Urban Market just had a successful, well-received opening day last weekend, so the way has been paved for Newburghian good times this spring/summer.

Last year’s festival features events galore: Music, art, food, local vendors, historical reenactments, children’s activities, educational displays, dancing, and the list goes on. The schedule hasn’t yet been posted for this year’s festivities, but we have every reason to think it will be just as jammed-packed.

A call for vendors went out a week ago for Newburgh Illuminated, so if you’d like to sell your wares, check in with the folks at The Marketplace to find out if there’s still room. Email them at events@newburghpba.org. Go learn more about Newburgh Illuminated (the year’s theme is “Made in Newburgh”) on the festival website or the Newburgh PBA. Oh, and watch this video.
