Historic “Stone Jug” House in Germantown, $495,000
Kandy Harris | December 23, 2015Since we’re putting together our Holiday Wishlist of homes this week, we would be remiss if we left out an 18th-century Dutch stone house. They’re some of our favorites, after all, even if they tend to come with quirks inherent in old homes (uneven floors, low ceilings with beams making them even lower, draftiness, the list goes on if it hasn’t been updated). It’s the history lover in us that keeps coming back to them time and time again, which is why we can’t stop gazing longingly at the Stone Jug House in Germantown, Columbia County.
The tell-tale blue Historic Registry sign says it all: It was built in 1752, making it one of the more venerable homes in the area. A tour through photos is like looking at a Hudson Valley pre-Revolutionary War time capsule, with loads of original details seemingly untouched by the passage of 260+ years. We’re talking recessed windows, farmhouse doors with iron hinges/handles, plank flooring, built-in cupboards and shelves, and a massive living room stone fireplace. But the details don’t end once you step outside the front door. The 5.6 acre property includes two vintage barns (one L-shaped), little stone outbuilding, and farm stand.
Interior space is an ample 2700 sq. ft. with 3 beds/3 baths. Tricorne hats and breeches not included.
