…you might just win yourself a farm. The bad news is, the farm isn’t located in upstate New York. It’s in central Virginia, and it’s called Newstead on the James. According to a recent piece in Modern Farmer, the farm’s owner Carol Carper is offering her 58 acre farm with barns, stalls, garages, storage sheds, and a cabin free to whoever wins an essay contest. The entrance fee is $233. Why? Ms. Carper is quoted in the article as saying that it’s a Fibonacci number, and that’s good enough for us.

But that’s not all. The farm also includes $100,000 cash (but only if Carper receives at least 7000 entries) and a 6000 sq. ft. brick manor house. Go to the official Newstead Farm website to see pictures of the house, which is impressive. The original manor house was built in 1905 upon the foundation of the previous manor house, which was burned down during the Civil War. The 1905 manor house was later restored in 1984.

If you can run a working farm and string together a convincing written argument in 200 words or less as to why you should, Newstead Farm could be all yours. Deadline for submission is September 7, 2016. More information and contest rules here. Good luck, incipient farmers!
