Live in Martin Van Buren’s (brother’s) House in Kinderhook, $449,000
Kandy Harris | October 29, 2015It’s not quite the same as living in a President’s house, but you’re pretty darn close. This c.1812 brick Federal was Lawrence Van Buren’s house in the charming village of Kinderhook. We can only imagine the conversations that took place between the Van Buren brothers (can we call them Marty and Larry? Probably not) inside of this historic home. Maybe soon-to-be 8th President Van Buren talked campaign strategy with Lawrence back in the 1830s in this house (if they did, it was probably in Dutch, since that was the Van Buren’s first language). Maybe the brothers hosted meet-and-greets with the political luminaries of the time in this house. Who knows what took place back in the day within in the walls of this village abode? Speculate more as you look at how beautifully this home was preserved and how much you love the staircase, woodworking, plank floors, fireplaces, and moldings.
Fun Fact about Kinderhook: Washington Irving, author of Rip Van Winkle and Halloween favorite the Legend of Sleepy Hollow briefly lived in Kinderhook while writing a book on the history of New York. Its said that Irving modeled the Van Tassel family homestead from Legend of Sleepy Hollow off of the Van Alen House in Kinderhook. Irving and Martin Van Buren, incidentally, were pals back then.
