Music in Woodstock this Weekend

Greetings Upstater Friends and Fans,
This is a gooooooooood weekend to be upstate if you are a music fan.
First off, remember I told you that Bowery Presents is now booking shows at Bearsville Theater? The good news: there are some truly spectacular shows that otherwise would probably pass lil’ ol’ Woodstock right by. The bad news: shows are selling out. Witness Friday night’s evening with Beirut…no more online tix but walk-ups will be avail. I’m pretty excited for The New Pornographers, Langhorne Slim and a few others. Here’s the schedule.
Saturday is a whole other sort of music experience. From 5 to 8 p.m., the newly announced Woodstock Peace Festival will present a caravan of world music at the otherworldly Opus 40 sculpture park. Musicians include Baird Hersey, Levanta, SRI Kirtan, Pulse Field/Soundshifter and Amy McTear and the One True Voice Choir will gather with flutes, gongs, soaring vocals, drums, guitar, violin, cello, didgeridoo, singing bowls and more to “caravan” around the Opus 40 property, taking attendees through a variety of world music with themes of peace, meditation, spirituality and joy. Tickets $20 advanced, $25 at the door. And don’t miss The Phoenicia Flea, a curated, super hip and def-not-the-usual artisan market on property here Saturday and Sunday.
This is all pretty amazing. Here’s the Woodstock Peace Festival (WPF) story. It’s the brainchild of an inspired group of Woodstock residents committed to leveraging the existing “brand” of Woodstock for the purpose of forwarding the cause of peace. Slated for the week of September 21st, WPF will kick off a “peace awareness week” in town with a youth-organized ceremony/performance, followed by four days of peace-themed open houses, workshops, and presentations, culminating in a large-scale event at Bearsville Theater. A percentage of the revenues generated from WPF will seed the launch of The Woodstock Center for Peace, an international peace education program that will bring young peace activists from conflict areas around the world to Woodstock on a yearly basis.
Sunday also looks like a stellar day for music lovers, with the Maverick Mash 100, a FREE concert from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with three distinct segments: music for families and young people, jazz and classical. Maverick Concerts is the longest running summer classical music festival in the United States. Yes, read that sentence again. Impressed, huh? This is the 100th season and the Maverick team has assembled some really fine musicians to present a free concert that will appeal to all. Performers include Mark Rust, Marc Black Band, Teri Roiger Quartet, Warren Vache and John di Martino, Nancy Allen, Carol Wincenc, Peter Serkin and Julia Hsu – local beloved performers as well as internationally acclaimed artist. My Lucky Noodles and Pippy’s food trucks will be on hand to feed the masses and Fiberflame Studio will have a children’s craft tent. Schedule of performances is right here.
