Poughkeepsie Farm Project’s Soup-A-Bowl 2017

  |  September 15, 2017

October has a lot of things going for it. Aside from Halloween schemes, this time of year calls for chunky sweaters, swanky scarves, stylish boots…and soup. So much soup. In preparation for the imminent cooler temps, earlier this week we shared this recipe for Celery Root Soup from Bryan Calvert of James restaurant.

Soup-A-Bowl 2017

While we’re stewing on the topic of soup (ha), it’s worth mentioning that October will also see the Poughkeepsie Farm Project’s Soup-A-Bowl 2017. (Think of it as the not-so-distant cousin to Women’s Studio Workshop’s Chili Bowl Fiesta.) Now in its tenth year, Soup-A-Bowl is truly a feat of a community synergy. The luncheon, which will be held at Vassar College this year, is entirely volunteer-run. Bring your appetite because there will be a smorgasbord of delicious soups supplied by local restaurants. You get to pick your very own artisanal bowl out of a colorful array of hundreds, all donated by local potters, then enjoy a meal with friends and family to the tune of a local folk band.

This is a fabulous, feel-good way to supplement your dinnerware collection. Brian K. Mahoney, Editorial Director of Luminary Media and husband to Lee Anne Albritton, PFP’s Executive Director, has attended Soup-A-Bowl faithfully for years. He says, “By now, we have so many soup bowls. We must have 50. The shelves grown under the weight.”

It’s all for a good cause: Soup-A-Bowl raises money support the Poughkeepsie Farm Project’s educational and charitable programming, including the donations and subsidies that provide fresh, healthy food for low-income residents and positive farm-to-table food learning experiences for urban youth. Margery Groten, Chair of the Soup-a-Bowl event committee, says, “It’s an excellent cause to support and a great way to be a part of the local community.”
