Sometimes, faithful readers, we here at Upstater really envy you. We’re having this huge, amazing, everything-included Uptown Kingston Giveaway, which is awesome, but we’re not allowed to enter it ourselves because winning would be like, a conflict of interest or… whatever… GOD WHY?! But our loss is your gain, and we’re casing the joints to give you a sneak peek of what’s in store. First up, we decided to soothe the regret that we can’t win cocktails at The Stockade by going for cocktails at The Stockade, and while we’ve written about how amazing it is before, it never fails to impress.

The “Smoke Signal:” Vida Mezcal, Creme de Mescal, fresh lime, Framboise Lambic

We ran into Paul Maloney, owner and head-bartender, and you’ve got to admire this guy’s confidence. Drawing a lot of inspiration from history, Paul treats cocktail preparation as an art form, and it shows. We asked him what he would get if he happened to have recently won a getaway to Kingston, and his casual response was “I designed the drink menu and I’d recommend everything.” The thing is though, is that he’s right. Everything looked amazing, and while our mouths wanted to taste the whole menu there and then, our livers protested, ever the voice of restraint. Paul says choosing a cocktail is like choosing your shoes; it depends on the weather, what you’re wearing, what jumps out at you, and what you’re in the mood for. We settled on the Summer Spritz, and it might have been the perfect compliment to a warm summer day. Served over ice in a wine glass, it’s a tantalizing mix of malbec, fresh lemon, seltzer, and a house-made syrup made from month-long tequila-soaked strawberries, it was outrageous.

“Ricky Por Mi Amante,” the cousin of our Summer Spritz. Made with Tequila por mi Amante (tequila soaked with the aforementioned strawberries for a month) half a lime, & club soda.

But we couldn’t stop at just the one. Next up was the Muddy Waters, a murky mixture of Campo de Encanto Pisco, fresh lemon, and China-China Amer. Pisco is a South-American full-strength liquor distilled from grapes, and China-China is a recently legal-to-import brand of Amer, which itself is an orange liquor with a cognac base. These flavors came together sumptuously to make something worth savoring and sipping slowly. It tasted like if a Manhattan was invented in Rio De Janeiro and called a Rio De Janeiro… sorry, that one got away from us a little bit. In any case, it was another cocktail knocked out of the park.

Which brings us back to the contest. Up for grabs is $100 worth of these and other delicious cocktails at The Stockade, $200 towards dinner at Boitson’s, $100 at Ester Wine and Spirits, and you can sleep it all off with a 3 night stay at The Saint James, one of Kingston’s beautiful luxury bed-and-breakfasts. As if this wasn’t already amazing, BSP has put up tickets to the show of your choice to round out the perfect Uptown Kingston Getaway package. Have you entered yet? Are you crazy, do it now! You can even re-enter every day, because we love you (but we’re still jealous). Limit 1 entry per day; must be 21+ to enter.
