Time Traveling with Upstater: Circa-1893 Grand Summer Home in Elka Park, $279,000

  |  November 23, 2016

When we think about quintessential summer houses in the Catskills, the first place that comes to mind is Elka Park. The tucked-away northern Catskills community just outside of Hunter Mountain seems almost frozen in the 19th century/early 20th century, a time when “summer cottages” in this part of upstate New York were thousands of square feet in size, with over a half-dozen bedrooms, and a huge porch (hopefully) overlooking a dramatic mountain vista. Onteora Park is another such community, located just a few miles up the road in Tannersville.

Like lots of these old Victorian/Edwardian/Arts & Crafts big homes in the northern Catskills, the one depicted above is seasonal. Can you imagine living in a 4500 square foot seasonal summer cottage? It’s something we fantasize about as soon as we lay eyes on an antique beauty like this one. Includes stained glass windows, ornate rocking chair porch large enough to accommodate a dinner party, original wood paneling and trim, period fixtures, five bedrooms, and three baths. Situated on two acres of mountainside land in the Elka Club, a private community located about 10 minutes south of Hunter Village in Greene County.
