Greene County Go Bragh!
Kandy Harris | March 16, 2015The County of Greene, which stretches from the western shore of the Hudson River into the Catskill Mountains, has long been seen by settlers as New York’s answer to rural Ireland. With rolling green hills and swathes of open farmland, the bucolic countryside’s comparisons to the Old Country is not surprising. In fact, the village of East Durham has fully embraced its Irish heritage and styles itself “The Emerald Isle of the Catskills” and is home to the MJQ Irish Cultural Center, which hosts the East Durham Irish Festival (Memorial Day weekend 2015) and the Catskills Irish Arts Week (July 13-18 2015). FYI: The Cultural Center grounds and traditional Irish-style cottages are also available for rental just in case you’re looking a taste of County Cork for your next event. For the rest of you wondering how the real estate market looks not only in Durham/East Durham but in the rest of County Greene, we’ll be exploring available properties all through the week. With any luck (see what we did there?), we’ll discover some good finds. Sláinte!
