This Kerhonkson Log Cabin Has a Great Surprise for ‘Gunk Climbers at $749K

This week, we’re looking at rustic homes that are tucked into nearly every corner of our beautiful region. Here’s a cute Kerhonkson cabin with a lofty surprise.

The 2,250-square-foot, three-bedroom log home is close to the Shawangunk Mountains—a world-class climbing destination—and great hiking at Mohonk and Minnewaska State Park.

Cathedral ceilings are highlighted with rough-cut trusses, wood-plank walls, and “sun tunnels” that channel light into the great room. Still, with all of the darker wood, you might want to lighten up some spots with pale paint accents.

Honey-toned pine floors run throughout the main level, except for the new ceramic-tiled kitchen. A woodstove in the great room keeps things toasty in the colder months.

There’s a roomy dining area between the great room and the kitchen, which features stark grey tones and a sleek, minimalistic look.

A center stairwell separates the great room from a recreation room—waitaminute, what’s that?

It’s a 24-foot-high climbing wall, built by the current homeowner who’s a professional mountaineer. When he’s not here in Kerhonkson, he’s a guide and climber in the Himalayas. In fact, last month he was in Nepal at the Mount Everest base camp, leading his 17th Everest expedition. This home’s next owners don’t need to challenge themselves that much, but this is still a really fun way to practice before tackling the ‘Gunks.

There’s one bedroom and one bath on the main level, true to the cabin’s Cape Cod style.

An open library/loft is atop the stairs, with a view of the recreation room.

French doors lead from the loft into the master bedroom, which mirrors the rest of the home’s woodsy ethos. The upstairs level appears to have no overhead lighting, so prepare to use floor/table space for lamps.

There’s a full bathroom up here, too.

A second bedroom upstairs has its own electric “woodstove,” and the master bedroom has one, too.

The full basement has a laundry room with tons of cabinets and countertops for storage.

A covered back porch leads into the backyard, which features wooded privacy and a firepit. If you feel like stretching your legs, you can explore the property’s 5.2 acres.
