Five-Figure Friday: A One (Maybe Two?) Bedroom in Wawarsing

  |  November 4, 2022

Welcome to Wawarsing on this Five-Figure Friday, and this ranch that has beautiful trees outside. The inside, though, needs work.

The 784-square-foot house is listed as having two bedrooms, but only one is pictured. It’s on Route 209 just outside the up-and-coming village of Ellenville, where enthusiastic groups like COFFE are working to bring awareness to everything that’s cool about it (professional theater at Shadowland Stages, delicious eats at restaurants like Tony & Nick’s Italian Kitchen and Aroma Thyme Bistro).

The house has a nice brick front porch that looks like it’s still in good shape. The house was built in 1935, way back when bungalow colonies were popular in the mountains here.

Wow, that floor is nice. Even the wall paneling (sooo retro) is in good shape, if that’s your jam. The rest of the walls need work, though.

The kitchen is off the living room. Yeah, it needs a lot of updating.

Like we’ve mentioned before, if the new owners want to gut this, they can carefully remove those cabinets and donate them to ReStores in Newburgh or Poughkeepsie: When the donated materials are later sold, the proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity.

The bathroom is your basic toilet/vanity/tub/tile mashup. Of everything in this room, we’d see if that vintage tub is a keeper.

This must be the bedroom. Again, those floors look new. We hope someone hadn’t begun a renovation job on this worthy abode, and then gave up.

Oh…we see. Water damage, a collapsing wall, and mold. Yikes—this is a cash-only sale, as-is, and the water is currently turned off.

Still, we believe this house is worth saving, if the right owner (with a lot of willpower and handy skills) comes along. The property itself is pretty, nearly a half-acre. Plus, it’s right around the corner from cool jazz and hot evenings at The Mod House of Ellenville, and just over three miles to downtown Ellenville.
